Milwaukee 6519-31 Sawzall

The Milwaukee 6519-31 Sawzall is the latest corded version in Milwaukee’s fantastic range of Sawzall reciprocating saws. Milwaukee invented the reciprocating saw back in 1951 and have dominated the market ever since.

The 6519-31 Sawzall comes with a 1-1/8-inch stroke length and there is also a shorter 3/4-inch stroke length model dsignated the 6509-31. The longer length stroke is designed to give a more aggressive cut where maximum cutting power is required for heavy duty work, and the shorter stroke is designed to give better control in tight spaces. You can also get cordless versions

When it comes to all out demolition capability, nothing comes close to a reciprocating saw. If you need the the ability to cut through a couple  of solid oak 2×4′s with some embedded nails and  a metal rod or two all in one go, a reciprocating saw is the way to do it. And the fact that you can buy the Sawzall market-leading reciprocating saw for under $100 is pretty amazing.

What to Look for When Buying a Reciprocating Saw
The two most important features that you’re interested in when you buy a tool that you’re going to use for heavy duty demolition work is the power of the motor and the design of the blade. You’ll also want to make sure it’s got other user friendly features such as low vibration to make using it more comfortable. In this Milwaukee 6519-31 Sawzall Review we’ll take a look at all the features that make it the market leader.

Powerful 12 Amp Motor
The 6519-31 has a powerful 12 amp motor which produces 0-3,000 strokes per minute, which, coupled with the longer  1-1/8-inch stroke length, gives you maximum cutting performance in a wide range of materials. And the fact that it’s corded means you don’t have to worry about battery life – it can go as long as you can.

Counter-weighted mechanism
Demolition work is tough and at the end of the day you don’t want to feel like someone has used the saw on you! The Sawzall has a counter-weighted mechanism which reduces vibration making it smoother and less tiring to use. It’s also got a re-designed front grip with improved ergonomics which also helps make it more comfortable to use for extended periods.

Milwaukee Sawzall BladeGear Protecting Clutch
By definition you’re doing heavy duty work, so you want to be confident that the saw’s up to the job. It’s got a powerful motor and you’re sticking it into some tough materials so you need to know it can handle it. All the new Milwaukee Sawzalls have a patented gear protecting clutch which absorbs high impact forces  and as a result extends gear and motor life.

QUIK-LOK® Blade Clamp
It’s always nice to be able to change any blade etc without having to use tools and the Sawzall has Milwaukee’s QUIK-LOK® blade clamp system which lets you do this. And, talking of the blade …

Milwaukee’s New Sawzall Blade
Before we get into the blade description, please note you do not get a blade with the Sawzall, you have to buy one separately

The cutting efficiency of the blade is obviously the most important factor when using a reciprocating saw, and Milwaukee have just introduced a new blade design with a couple of very useful new features, called Nail Guard and Fang Tip, keeping them at the forefront of the market.

Nail Guard
In the past you had to choose between speed or durability – wood blades are fast but don’t last very long when you hit nails as the nails get caught between teeth and break them. Not any more! Milwaukee’s new Nail Guard design (pictured above) has an extra small tooth between the larger teeth, which means that nails don’t get caught. To quote from their press release

The most notable change has been the shift from a 6 TPI (teeth per inch) pattern to a faster, more aggressive 5 TPI pattern. To increase tooth durability, Milwaukee has developed the patent-pending Nail Guard™ tooth design to prevent nails from fracturing the blade’s teeth upon impact. The cutting edge of the new tooth form remains engaged with the nail, rather than allowing nails to drop into the gullets and cause teeth-fracturing impacts. The combined result is a blade that is tougher and cuts two times faster.

Fang Tip
The other problem they’ve looked at is plunge cutting. Fang Tip is a fang-like tooth at the front of the blade which makes plunge-cutting much easier than in the past. The fang tip design bites into the wood on first contact and doesn’t gouge up the workpiece in the process.

How much should you expect to pay?
Despite all this great innovation the the Milwaukee 6519-31 Sawzall is still incredibly good value at around $100.
