Bosch 33618-02 18-volt Cordless DrillThe Bosch 36618-02 Cordless Drill has an excellent power to weight ratio and is very smooth with incredible torque. The new angled ergonomic design is compact enough to work in tight spaces and makes it easy to apply the correct pressure as you drill or drive fasteners without straining your wrist. The angle also helps to work between studs or in tight spaces where a lot of other drills would not fit.

What to Look for When Buying a Cordless Drill
There are a number of things to look for when buying a cordless drill. In this Bosch 36618-02 Cordless Drill Review we will look at the most important features which are the number of volts, the battery, the weight of the drill and the speed.

How Many Volts?
One of the most important components of a cordless drill is the number of volts. The greater the volts the faster the motor spins and therefore the more powerful the drill. It does have a downside however in that generally the more volts you have the heavier the battery and therefore the heavier the drill will be. So you need to keep this in mind when choosing a drill. Think about whether you will be using it for long periods. If so, you don’t want anything too heavy – you will really be feeling it by the end of the day. However, with this Bosch Cordless drill you get the best of both worlds – it’s 18 volts with 500 in./lbs. of torque making it very powerful but, due to the slim pack batteries, it’s still lightweight at only 3.7lbs so that it won’t put undue pressure on your wrist. In addition, it’s quite compact allowing it to get in places that many of the bulkier 18 Volt drills can’t fit, so you can use it in tight spaces like under sinks, and in corners, or a closet.

Choice of batteries
Another useful feature is that, like all the tools in Bosch’s 18-Volt line, this drill/driver can be used with either a 1.3-Ah Slim Pack battery (two included) or a 2.6-Ah Fat Pack battery. Most users will appreciate the light weight of the slim-pack batteries that offer plenty of power for most jobs and will probably never need the fat pack batteries, which have to be bought separately and costs approximately $90. However, it’s nice to have the choice and, currently, Bosch is the only power tool manufacturer that gives you this option.

Lithium-Ion Batteries for Long-Lasting, Quick-Charging Performance
The Bosch 36618-02 uses lithium-ion (called “Litheon” by Bosch) batteries and Bosch’s proprietary Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) system to provide “maximum cycle life, minimum self-discharge, and no memory-effect”. What that means in plain English is you can recharge them time after time without losing power capacity, and there is no problem with storing them fully charged so they are ready to work whenever needed. This makes them good for occasional users who won’t be using the drill everyday as you won’t have to charge the batteries every time before you can start.

Lithium-ion batteries are also lighter than comparable 18-volt batteries, meaning if you are drilling or driving screws overhead or reaching deep into a cabinet with your arm extended, your arm will not give out before the job is done. They will also fully charge in 30 minutes and will be at 85% capacity in 15 minutes so you can keep working non-stop if you switch between the two batteries.

Choose the Right Speed for the Job – Dual Speed Range for Versatility and Control
If you’ve ever tried to drive a screw at high speed you’ll know that the screw can jump out of the slot which is not only annoying, but it can be dangerous. The beauty of this Bosch cordless drill is that it offers the convenience of a dual speed range of 0-500/0-1,600 rpm for optimal versatility. With 20 clutch settings and a variable-speed trigger to help you match the best speed to the job, you can achieve precise results. This means that you have the option of adjusting the speed of the drill and slow it down resulting in more control – so you have less chance of screws flying across the room.

Bosch 33618-02 Durashield BodyTough, Durable Construction
It’s all too easy to accidentally drop your drill as you work, especially in harsh jobsite conditions. However, with this Bosch 36618-02 the housing is made of Durashield, a tough ABS/Nylon composite with a unibody construction that is steel reinforced to protect the tool from damage if you drop it. This housing is both flexible and impenetrable, and is designed to easily withstand being dropped without cracking or suffering other damage. The picture on the right shows just how flexible the body is. However, we don’t recommend that you try this yourself at home – it’s likely to invalidate your warranty!
